FERMENTATION
Anaerobic process, as opposed to reactions involving oxygen, is called fermentation. Breaking of chemical bonds in molecules of nutritives releases a certain amount of energy. Due to formation of phosphodiester bonds this energy is trapped and accumulated in a cell. During fermentation intermediate products with high-energy phosphate bonds are formed. High-energy phosphate groups are transferred to acceptor molecules, where they can serve as sources of chemical energy for vitally important processes. Among acceptors of this kind ADP plays the main role. As the result of addition (phosphorylation) of a high-energy phosphate group to ADP ATP is formed.
