ORGAN

Organ is a structural and functional unit of a multicellular eukaryotic organism. Organs become differentiated in the process of ontogenesis and consist of one or more tissues. Vegetative and generative organs are distinguished.

Vegetative organs perform main functions of an organism, except sexual reproduction (for animals and plants) or sporogenesis (for plants). Vegetative organs of plants can perform the function of vegetative reproduction. In inferior plants this is thallome; vegetative organs of higher plants are leaves, caules, roots. Vegetative organs of animals are respiratory, digestive, eliminative organs, etc.

Generative organs (from the Latin genero "I give birth", "I produce") are organs of sexual reproduction of plants (for example, antheridium or archegonium in higher cryptogamic gymnosperms; flower in angiosperms). Generative organs of animals are called sexual (genital) organs.
