MITOSIS

Mitosis (indirect division of the nucleus, karyogenesis) is a process of division of a diploid cell resulting in formation of two identical, also diploid, cells. This is a normal way of reproduction of eukaryotic somatic cells. Mitosis begins one of the four sequential stages of the cell cycle (stage M).

5 stages are distinguished in mitosis, which are:

• prophase,
• anaphase,
• prometaphase,
• telophase,
• metaphase.
