MEIOSIS I
Meiosis I (first division of meiosis) is the first stage of meiosis. Similar to mitosis, meiosis I is subdivided into prophase (prophase I), prometaphase (prometaphase I), metaphase (metaphase I), anaphase (anaphase I), and telophase (telophase I).
By the end of the first division, chromosome set becomes reduced and turns from tetraploid to diploid, exactly like during mitosis, and two cells are formed of one. The key difference is in the fact, that during the first division of meiosis two sister chromatids, connected in the area of centromere, enter into each cell, whereas during mitosis - two separated chromatids. Then, after a short resting stage II, when chromosomes do not duplicate, the second division of meiosis happens quickly. The first division of meiosis lasts almost the time of the whole meiosis, and it is much more complicated then the second one.
