INDUCTION INTERACTIONS

Induction interactions are weak interactions from the van der Waals group of interactions. They are of electrostatic nature. Inductive effect includes interaction between a dipole of one molecule with the dipole, which has been induced by the field of the dipole of the first molecule in the neighbouring molecule. The energy of the induction force is equal to:

, where

a is polarizability of the second molecule,
p is the dipole moment of the first molecule,
r is the distance between the dipoles.

This formula is true only for point dipoles, that is, on condition that the sizes of the dipoles are small comparing with the distance between them. If the condition of the dipoles being point is not fulfilled, then calculation of interaction between the monopoles (point charges) is necessary.
