DIPLOID

Diploid (from the Greek diplóos - double and eidos - kind) is an organism, a cell or a nucleus with a twofold (diploid) set of chromosomes. Diploid set of chromosomes contains two copies of each autosome (all chromosomes, except sex chromosomes) and two sex chromosomes. Let us denote the whole totality of autosomes by A, one sex chromosome by X, and the other one by Y, then diploid set of chromosomes is 2A+2X or 2A+X+Y. In other words, diploid set of chromosomes makes two haploid sets. Diploid organisms possess two sets of homologous chromosomes. A typical somatic cell has a diploid set of chromosomes.
