CENTROMERE

Centromere (kinetochore) (from Lat. centrum, Greek kéntron - centre, and méros - part) is a region of a chromosome, which controls its movement to different poles of the cell during cell division. It is the site, where fibers (microtubules) of cleavage spindle fasten to the chromosome. Change of position of the centromere in a certain chromosome is a criterion of chromosomal rearrangements.
