ANAPHASE

Anaphase is the forth stage of the five stages of the mitotic process of cell division. The preceding stage, metaphase, lasts for long time. It finishes sharply, as if after a special signal. It finishes with division of two kinetochores of each chromosome, and every chromatide begins to move slowly towards a pole of the spindle. During this anaphase movement kinetochore fibers shorten, as chromosomes approach the poles. Approximately at the same time fibers of the spindle lengthen, and two poles of the spindle diverge even farther. Anaphase usually lasts only a few minutes.
