TRANSFERASES

Transferases are a family of ferments, which catalyze reversible transfer of various atomic groups from molecules of one organic compound (donor) to others (acceptors). According to the chemical nature of the groups, which are transferred, transferases are divided into ones, transferring one-carbon residues (methyltransferases), aldehyde or ketone residues, acyl groups, sugar residues (glycosiltransferases), amino groups (aminotransferases), phosphoryl residues (phosphotransferases), etc. Transferases play an important part in intermediate metabolism. Over 450 ligases are known.
