LYASES

Lyases are a family of enzymes catalyzing reactions of detaching of certain groups of atoms from their substrates, with formation of double bonds. Lyases also catalyze additive reactions on double bonds, which are formed in chemical reactions, different from hydrolysis. Depending on the atoms, which participate in formation or cleavage of double bonds, lyases are divided into following classes:

Synthases make a separate class of lyases. Lyases take part in glycolysis and fermentation processes, tricarbonic acid cycles, carbamide cycles, etc. Over 100 lyases are known.
